[Diamondbacks, Yankees eliminated]

Both of last year's World Series contenders have been eliminated after the first round of the playoffs!!? The Diamondbacks had lost their star Luis Gonzalez to injuries, but the Yankees have no such excuse. Apparently, this is the year of the scrappy underdogs, who have won ALL FOUR divisional series. Home field advantage has not made much difference; the home teams won only 8 of the 17 first-round games. Mediocre attendance may have hurt the Oakland A's and (to a lesser extent) the Atlanta Braves, but full houses in Arizona and New York were not enough to guarantee wins for the Diamondbacks and Yankees. Meanwhile, the lowly Angels, Twins, Giants, and Cardinals all drew big enthuasiastic crowds, and that may have helped put them over the top.

NOTE: This is a "post facto" blog post, taken from the pre-November 2004 archives.

blog highlights

Blog highlights have been compiled for the years 2010-2012 thus far, and eventually will be compiled for earlier years, back to 2002.

Explanation

The "home made" blog organization system that I created was instituted on November 1, 2004, followed by several functional enhancements in subsequent years. I make no more than one blog post per day on any one category, so some posts may cover multiple news items or issues. Blog posts appear in the following (reverse alphabetical) order, which may differ from the chronological order in which the posts were originally made:

  1. Wild birds (LAST)
  2. War
  3. Science & Technology
  4. Politics
  5. Latin America
  6. Culture & Travel
  7. Canaries ("Home birds")
  8. Baseball (FIRST)
