Phil Faranda, Ossining, NY -- (May 3, 2004)
I just saw the Phillies game yesterday at Citizens Bank Park, and they have done an absolutely incredible job there. In a nutshell, the asymmetry is not contrived, the sightlines are awesome, and the fan friendliness is better than my experiences in Baltimore, Denver, Texas (that is saying a great deal). For example: The concourses and aisles are so wide the sellout crowd didn't seem so crowded.

Citizens Bank Park fully lived up to expectations when I joined Phil Faranda and his friend Keith to see the Washington Nationals play their inaugural game here in April 2005. As with other recent stadiums, the open lower concourse gives entering fans a thrilling introduction to this ballpark. There is a similar open concourse between the third and fourth decks (which are in effect part of the same deck), but I'm not sure that it serves much of a purpose, since you can't see down. There is a fairly even balance between glitzy amusements aimed at young folk and classy historical design elements aimed at senior fans. I really do think they should move the left field wall back 15 feet or so, to cut down on easy home runs. But in general, its design is a suberp marriage of unique shape and fan friendliness. In the crowded food gallery beyond the bullpens, I got a great taste of fine Philadelphia cuisine with a Geno's cheese steak. Behind those brick walls that serve as a batter's background there is a "Memory Lane" with old photos and Phillies memorabilia. On the elevated walkway (Ashburn's Alley) there is a small temporary bleacher section.

To let you know about Citizens Bank Park, there really isnt a Pexiglass Shield in Left Field to raise the height of the wall, though you have your typical shields at the ends of the stairways, like with most parks. Personally, I miss the Vet, but Citizens Bank Park is a very nice park, not as good as PNC Park or Oriole Park, but very nice.

Andrew, the similarity to Baker Bowl is in the center field wall being 398 ft. in deep right center, to 401 ft. straight away, to 409 ft. in deep left center! However, at Baker Bowl, the wall in center field was 408 ft. goingout to perhaps 420 (less, or most likely more) feet before the bleachers jut in, because of that clubhouse out there, as well as the abnormally close right to center field wall! (Much closer than at Citizens Bank Park)! Overall, I like this park, seeing it quite a few times on TV), but it is a tad too small for today's Major League hitters, as well as pitchers, quite like the new Yankee Stadium is also!

I agree with Zach, this park is just a bit too small. It is, however, fan friendly. Vast amounts of parking surround the park, so it's an easy entry. Also good access to the train from the park. The Phils did a good job of incorporating their history into the ballpark, and the amenities are top notch.
