The only thing I can say about this place was at least it kept you cool from the ridiculous Houston humidity. Other than that, it was nothing to write home about, especially after the scoreboard was removed. Upper decks were very steep, and once the Astros started losing, ushers became surly and wouldn't let fans move around, even when the stadium was three-quarters empty.

I was there in 1965, 1968, and twice in 1989. The first two times, the novelty of indoor baseball had not yet worn off. We sat in the mezzanine the first two times. The Astros played the Cubs in 1965 and the Giants in 1968. Got to see Ernie Banks and Willie Mays play baseball. In 1965 Jim Gentile hit a homer and the scoreboard did its thing. In 1989, it was in the process of being ruined by the addition of outfield grandstands, so it wasn’t quite so picturesque. We sat high in the upper deck down the 1B line, two rows in front of a drunk who kept yelling at Astros’ P Mark Portugal to “Strike his (behind) out” in a bad-to-the-bone Thorogood rasp. Our kids were amused. We had better seats the next day, near the RF foul pole. The kids enjoyed the ballgames more than the amusement park across the street. Wasn’t too hot, wasn’t too cold.

During the late 60's and 70's I attended at least 100 games in the dome. Every time I walked in I was in awe of the beauty and amazed that this was a ballpark. I've never fully understood why there exist so many poor reviews and ratings of this park. Perhaps many critics forget this was a domed stadium built over 50 years ago. The atmosphere was dynamic and the scoreboard the most unique in baseball for many years.
My only complaint was the challenge hitters had to hit home-runs. The ball didn't travel well as it was and the power alleys were deep (390). Saw George Foster hit a shot off the left field wall so hard it sounded like a door slamming. In an interview after the game he said he'd never hit a ball that hard that didn't leave the park. Line-drives seldom had a chance in the dome. I loved and miss the place, watching football there is another story. MR
