Going to Chase Field, or BOB as it was in 1998 when I went to a game there, was a better experience than I was expecting. It was the first domed baseball game for me and still is to this day.
On a trip out to LA I stopped in Phoenix (a lovely city) and caught a game with the Diamondbacks vs my Cardinals. It was 1998 and the McGwire homerun chase was in full swing. I found it funny when the D-Backs would walk him and the fans would boo their own pitcher. If I closed my eyes, I would have thought I was in Busch II.
Other than having to adjust to the strange aspect of being indoors, I thought it was a great venue for baseball. The first inning or so felt like being in a large airplane hangar, but soon I found myself not even thinking about it and enjoyed the game. The fans were great and the sightlines were good too. My only gripe was the stupid pool in right field. My favorite feature is the fact that center field is so deep and part of a fan area sticks out over the wall there. I also like the dirt path from home plate to the pitcher's mound. Sure the place can be used for football and other events but it is obvious that baseball is the true identity for this park.

Oh Chase Field...where do I begin? Maybe its the baseball purist or Southern Californian in me, but the game was not meant to be played indoors. Of course in Phoenix you don't really have that option for much of season, so you can't blame the D-Back for that. From the outside, the stadium looks like an enormous airplane hanger, and I when I say enormous I mean it. You can see this thing miles away. Once indoors the stadium feels more like a shopping mall with a baseball field in the center, which might be fine for your average family, but it is certainly not the greatest baseball experience. Our seats felt like miles from the field as the upper decks extend into, what seems like Tempe. But the saddest thing about Chase was the complete lack of energy. The D-backs weren't having the greatest year, but I have never seen a stadium so empty (no more than 10k fans) and lifeless. It was so quiet, my friends and I realized that by stomping our feat we could make an echo loud enough to be heard around the stadium. I am 90% sure we caused a wild pitch (NOT A JOKE).

The thing that I always wondered about is at Chase Field when they set it up for College Football Bowl games is why not run the football field from third base to right field? This way, the swimming pool could be used and the people could still see the field from the corner of the right field end zone! Temporary bleachers would be from left to center field instead of right to center field, thereby blocking that view from the pool in deep right center field! No, I haven't seen a game here live, but did see it on TV including when Michigan native Kirk Gibson used to manage the Diamondbacks (he was a big star on the Tigers back in the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s)!

Another pleasant surprise. The roof was open the day I was there, and I think that makes a big difference (it was April). The vibe around the park was really nice, and we were able to pick up some Mexican fare on the way in. Beer selection was good, and the look angles were also pretty darn good. I've heard, but not experienced, that the AC in the top rows of the upper deck is not good.

Since 2018 when I moved to the valley of the sun, I have been to Chase Field a handful of time. The difference in the atmosphere when the roof is open and closed is monumental. When it’s open, it’s a fantastic ballpark with views of downtown Phoenix and the mountains to the north (8 rating). When it’s closed, it has the feel of a Costco with a baseball game taking place (4 rating). For that reason, I would suggest attending April/May or late September ballgames here.
There are upgrades that need to be done soon. The roof is no longer moved with fans in the stadium due to safety issues, and the A/C system which makes a metal building comfortable in 115 degree weather is not working as well as it used to. I personally think there are too many seats in the upper deck down the lines, but I’m sure there could be a creative use for that space while reinvigorating the ballpark. Chase Field is showing it’s age now, but there is still a lot of life in it so I hope the county will save it.
