The best of John's bird photos, 2001 |
These excellent photos were taken during John's trips to Texas and Florida, and some are from South Dakota. Please direct any comments about these photos to johndavidclem@yahoo.com.
Western tanager; (Taken in Black Hills, SD, 2001)
I'll never forget when Jacqueline and I saw one of these for the first time at the visitors center at Devils Tower, WY in 1998. Spectacular!
Altamira oriole; (Taken near Chapero, TX, 2001)
Rose-breasted grosbeak; (Taken at The Bluffs Golf Course, Vermillion, SD, 2001)
For some reason, I've had bad luck spotting the beautiful male rose-breased grosbeaks; the females are somewhat less uncommon in Virginia during migration season.
Least bittern; (Taken somewhere in Florida, 2001)
Caracara; (Taken near Laguna Atascosa, TX, 2001)
Blackpoll warbler; (Taken in Sioux Falls, SD, 2001)
For some reason (computer fatigue?), I originally thought this was a black and white warbler, but John alertly corrected me. Blackpoll warblers have a just tinge of yellow-green on the edges of their primary wing feathers. They are one of the most common warblers in the (late) spring, but not so common in the fall. They have a very high pitched tseee-tseee-tseeee call that you might not even notice if you weren't paying attention.
